这是一本在写作过程中带给我许多乐趣的书，讲述的是一个在俗世大获全胜，同时又努力事奉上帝的女人。她作为女权历史学家口中的“博学之人”，是少数几个为学习知识的权利而努力争取的女人；对于都铎的史学家来说，她是创建了家族的“女家长”；在不那么恭敬的传记作家笔下，她又是来自地狱的“老婊子”。为读者塑造这样一个从孩提时就笃信上帝安排的命运，而在成年后敢于为儿子夺取英格兰王位的女人，对我来说很有挑战，也充满乐趣。小说中有些内容是真实的历史，有些是推测，还有些纯属虚构。尤其是我们并不知道是谁杀死了伦敦塔中的王子们，甚至不知道他们是否真的死在了伦敦塔中。显然，对王位拥有合法继承权的那些人——理查德三世、白金汉公爵、玛格丽特·博福特和她的儿子——从他们的死亡中获利最大。
